Bearman’s Gennet

Bearmans Gennet

One of the local gennet pears found on a farm south of Gloucester.  Gennets are sweet early pears also called Jennet, Hedge or Harvest pears.  The were once used, often with the addition of crab apples, to make a quick maturing “harvest” perry.  In 1878 it was recorded that “few homesteads were without a few Early Jennet trees, which still bear bountifully, though of an enormous age”.
