Known from the 17th century – the oldest recorded variety reputed to have grown at a farm known as “Barlands” in Bosbury, Herefordshire at a manor that once belonged to the Order of Templars. It has long been suggested that the pear may have been introduced by the early Knights Templars on their return from defending the route to Jerusalem!
